The Special Story of Liberté and Beauty

One story we would especially like to share with you is that of Liberté and Beauty.

These two wild horses were living without proper care. No one was looking after them. During the summer, they even had no access to water during periods of extreme heat. Their hooves had become so severely overgrown that every step was difficult.

Their future looked bleak. There was even talk of the horses being shot.

Rescuing them required a great deal of time, patience, investment and perseverance. At our domain in France, we created a special woodland habitat for Liberté and Beauty, where they can finally live safely and freely.

Today, Liberté and Beauty are safe. Their story is a remarkable rescue story that shows how much difference one person can make when no one else is willing to step in.

We warmly invite you to read their full story on our new website.

We now provide a permanent home to more than 90 rescued animals. Alongside our horses, many other animals have also found their way to us. Each has their own story, but they all share the same promise: a safe life, loving care, and a forever home.

For Liberté and Beauty, and for all the other animals entrusted to our care, we are looking for kind-hearted people who would like to help with the costs of food, hay, daily care and veterinary treatment.

Would you like to contribute to their future? We warmly invite you to become a supporter or make a one-time donation.

Together, we can show that every life has value.

Fighting Against the Exploitation of Horses

At Hearts for Horses Foundation, we not only rescue animals but also fight against the exploitation of horses in various industries. Many of our horses came from systems where they were abused and discarded as soon as they were no longer profitable.

*PMU Industry – Mares are kept pregnant to collect their urine for hormone production. Once they are no longer needed, they are often slaughtered.
*Blood Mare Industry – Horses are drained of their blood for hormones used in breeding programs.
*Overbreeding & Slaughter – Healthy horses are treated as disposable commodities in the livestock industry.
*The Sport Industry – Sport horses are often trained under extreme pressure and exploited. When they can no longer perform, they are frequently sold, abandoned, or sent to slaughter.
*Incorrect Training & Mismanagement – Many horses endure training based on force, pressure, and harmful methods, leading to both physical and mental suffering.

"Our mission is not only to provide rescued horses with a safe home but also to raise awareness, take action, and fight against these practices. That’s why we share our expertise on humane training, proper management, and respectful horse care."

Foreverhome Rescue "Stichting Hearts for Horses"

Since its founding on January 23, 2015, Foreverhome Rescue "Stichting Hearts for Horses" has provided a safe and loving place for animals in need. In 2022, we made the difficult but necessary decision to relocate from the Netherlands to France. Our previous location could no longer meet the needs of the animals due to limited space and resources. In France, we now have more space and opportunities to better care for the animals.

The Difference for Nungka and Choyotha

What Could Have Happened...

"Nungka and Choyotha lived together with a family, where they were once kept as sport ponies." However, as the children grew older, they lost interest in the horses. The animals were deemed "too old," and the family stopped caring for them. Choyotha, who suffered from a cancerous growth, made their future even more uncertain. Under immense pressure, the father of the family saw no other solution than to send the horses to slaughter. This could have been the end for these two beautiful horses.

What Happily Happened...

Fortunately, the father discovered Foreverhome Rescue - Stichting Hearts for Horses. The founder of the sanctuary took in Nungka and Choyotha, giving them a second chance at a better life. Despite Choyotha’s illness, both horses were able to enjoy eight happy years together in a herd, surrounded by love, care, and respect. They reached the remarkable age of 32 and passed away naturally, surrounded by their herd and the compassionate care they received.

Heartbreaking :The Unavoidable Part of Animal Welfare"

The Story of Moonlight

Moonlight was a beautiful Welsh pony and a true rescue. She was already older when she came to us, but she spent more than 10 happy years with us. Unfortunately, three years ago, we faced one of the hardest moments we have ever experienced.

Moonlight suddenly developed an acute intestinal inflammation. In the Netherlands, a veterinarian came to see her, but to our shock, she literally walked away when we refused to immediately put her down. We were stunned, but we knew we had to help her.

In a rush, we called another veterinarian. She came immediately, administered pain relief, and told us we could take her to the clinic urgently. The chances of recovery were slim, but she gave us hope. No expense or effort was spared to arrange special transport for Moonlight. Once at the clinic, she was examined and treated, and our founder stayed by her side every moment.

But there was nothing more we could do. The doctors told us that it was an internal inflammation not caused by food or other external factors. It was inevitable, and we had to let her go. The costs were enormous—over 3000 euros—but that didn’t matter. What mattered most was that Moonlight knew we had done everything for her.

Saying goodbye to Moonlight was one of the hardest things we’ve ever had to do. She was only 26 years old. Our other horses have all passed away naturally, often at the age of 32. The loss of Moonlight remains painful, and even though it happened three years ago, the grief still feels as raw as if it were yesterday.

The Power of Love and Positivity
At Hearts for Horses, we’ve sadly encountered many stories of animal suffering—abandoned horses and elderly cats that we’ve rescued and cared for. But despite the sadness, we focus on what truly matters: spreading love for animals and positivity. Our founder believes that every animal deserves a second chance and is committed to sharing that message.

Thanks to your support, we can continue fighting for animals like Moonlight. Together, we can give them a safe, loving forever home.

No Donations, Only Dedication
For Moonlight’s care and treatment, there were no donations. Everything was fully paid for by the founder of the foundation, no matter how heavy the burden. Her dedication and love for the animals made it possible.

But now, we truly hope that more people will step in to help. With your support, we can make a real difference and continue to assist emergencies like Moonlight’s. Together, we can ensure that every animal receives the care and love it deserves.

OUR STORY

Angelique Beauvence-Founder, Executive Director & Farm Manager

OUR STORY
none of this would have been possible without the founder. Her unconditional dedication and love for animals made everything happen. Horses, cats, dogs, roosters, and other animals were literally dumped on her doorstep—often animals that nobody wanted anymore or had already been given up on. Yet she never gave up, and under her care, these animals were given a second chance. She personally covered all the financial needs for our Foundation, even when it was a heavy burden on her.

The founder brings an extraordinary combination of skills and experience to this mission. With decades of expertise in equine welfare, farm management, and infrastructure development, she has built and maintained a safe haven for rescued animals. Her award-winning career as a singer-songwriter and holistic vocal coach enabled her to personally sponsor the foundation’s efforts, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to its mission.

When the foundation began in the Netherlands in 2015, it was the only animal rescue of its kind in the region, dedicated to giving horses and other animals a second chance. In an area where horse rescues were not widely appreciated, the founder stood alone in her mission. To ensure the safety of the horses and protect them from potential harm, she chose to keep publicity to a minimum. Despite these efforts, unforeseen challenges arose.

In 2021, due to municipal zoning changes, she lost the foundation’s location, and all the stables—financed and constructed under her direction—had to be torn down. Desperate to continue her work, she sought assistance from Dutch organizations, including well-known  animal charities, but no one was willing to help.

This was a turning point. It became clear that support could not be taken for granted. Determined to give the animals a better life, the founder made a bold decision: she sold everything she owned and relocated to France, bringing her beloved animals with her. This act of love and sacrifice ensured that the animals could continue to live in peace and safety.

Since the foundation began, more than 35 horses have been rescued, alongside numerous dogs, cats, chickens, and turkeys. Many of these animals came with severe medical issues or trauma, requiring not only shelter but also surgeries and long-term rehabilitation.

One remarkable story is that of Stormy, her first great love. He came from the racetrack and had been written off at just 6 years old. His future was the slaughterhouse because he could no longer walk and suffered from chronic bronchitis. When the founder saw him, she didn’t hesitate for a moment. She took him in immediately, even though she had to pay for him. Through love, trust, and a free life, Stormy healed. Everything that seemed lost was restored.

In the foundation's early years, many animals arrived with severe trauma. One horse, Don Blanco, came from Spain and had been so badly abused that it took years for him to rebuild trust. With endless patience and love, he eventually blossomed. Now, at the age of 36, Don Blanco is still with us, a true superhero.

Another horse, who had been used at a blood bank for experiments for years, needed a lot of time and peace to overcome her fear. This is what the foundation stands for: giving animals a second chance and a loving forever home.

Through all of this, the founder’s dedication remains unwavering. Even after a severe accident that left her with permanent injuries and a disabled arm, she continued to devote herself full-time to the care of the animals. Her work is unpaid, full-time, and fueled by her love and determination.

Over the years, her efforts have provided not only shelter but also life-saving medical care and rehabilitation for animals in desperate need. This is her life’s work—an ongoing mission to provide hope, healing, and a better future for those who have none.

It was not until December 2024 that the founder had a moment of clarity. After consulting with a recognized specialist, she was presented with the financial reports of several Dutch animal charities. The data revealed significant spending on expenses such as expensive office buildings, investments, and other non-essential purchases. The specialist shared a profound insight: "You’ve proven that you can sustain this work non-stop on your own. If donations came to you, nothing would be wasted. Every cent would go directly to the animals, without unnecessary overhead or personal expenses."

He added: "You can grow when you no longer believe you have to do it on your own. It’s too big a responsibility to carry on your shoulders alone."

This realization marked a new beginning. The founder opened the doors to collaboration and support, grounded in the belief that every donor deserves to see their contribution directly impact the animals.

"From Christmas Dinner to Forever Home Hero"
This is Lucky, our brave blind turkey who got a second chance in her Forever Home. She was almost on the Christmas menu, but thanks to love and a little luck, she’s now found a place where she is cherished and safe.

Despite her blindness, Lucky has found a special way to explore the world and fully enjoy life. She roams around, follows the sound of our voices, and makes everyone laugh with her unique personality.

Every day with us is a celebration, and Lucky reminds us how important it is to cherish every life, no matter the circumstances. She’s our very own Christmas miracle and a beautiful example of hope and rescue.

"Don Blanco: A True Survivor"
Don Blanco is 45 years old, one of our oldest horses, and a true symbol of resilience.

He survived years of abuse before being rescued by our founder.

He thinks he still has all his teeth, but in reality, he’s down to just one! !

Now, he shines every day, even with just one tooth and needing extra care. He eats seven carefully prepared meals a day, stays warm under a thick blanket, and is lovingly watched over around the clock.

Caring for Don Blanco is a full-time job, but his eternal smile reminds us that resilience and love can overcome anything.

  • … Some moments on the farm are heavy and heartbreaking, but we find strength by seeing things through the eyes of a child. It’s that unconditional love and trust for the animals that helps us through even the toughest days.
